My chickens won't lay eggs. What am I doing wrong? I have 2 Red Star hens that are nearing 30 weeks old, as well as a few others of different breeds that are about 24 weeks old, and I have not seen one egg yet. I keep them well watered and feed them a mix of starter mash and cracked corn, as well as any mild vegetable scraps we may have in the house. They are outside most of the day so they get plenty of bugs and grass in their diet too. Am I doing something wrong? When I was a kid we had a flock of Rhode Island Reds and I don't remember having to do anything special to get them to lay eggs.
I presume breeding chickens is kind of sensitive so it is important to take into consideration the kind of food they need to eat at a certain period of time. I have raised some chickens in my local area and so far I don't encounter issues in terms of chickens not laying eggs. When they reached 30 weeks I fed them layer and a little amount of corn. I also fed enough water for them.
Laying eggs sometimes takes more than the proper diet for chickens. Weather is also a factor that you should look into if your chickens have a hard time laying eggs. How's the weather in your area? Are you chickens often irritable instead of comfortable? Then they may have a problem with the weather or the temperature in your area. I also agree that you should give them the right chicken feeds to help them lay good eggs.
Isn't this the Carribean vacation forum specifically about Corn Island? Then this is not really the right place to post about chickens not laying eggs. As I've read from Wikipedia, The Corn Islands or Las Islas del Maíz are two islands about 70 km east off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. It is a good tourist destination for those who like scuba diving and snorkeling as it has many surrounding coral reefs. Around the island, it is also possible to see marine life such as Barracudas, nurse sharks, green turtles, and spotted eagle rays.
I agree with you Chin chin. Las Islas del Maíz is one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. I had been there for a vacation one time, and the place was really interesting. I enjoyed my stay so much and I didn't regret a single second during my stay. Although it's a little bit costly but there are so many activities that you can do there such as water sports activities.

I guess you can also practice your chicken feeding activities! But I think the great thing about Corn Island it is off the beaten path of the usual resorts and Caribbean tourism market. |
