My best friend is going to Puerto Rico to visit her grandmother and asked to be go along with her. I would like to do some site seeing while I am there and wondering if it would be benefical for me to pick up a few phrases in spanish before I go.

As a nice courtesy to the area it might be nice to learn the greetings and a thank you. I like to do that when i travel. Overall though English is spoken and you wont have a problem at all. :)

The language was my biggest concern. Thanks for the info. It is good to know that I won't have to carry a spanish to english dictionary around with me. I am so excited about this trip and can't wait to go.

Learn some of the rules for pronunication so it seems like you are at least trying...for example... Pollo. Read that aloud form a menu as you would in english... PO-LOW and they will know you are a true gringo. In spanish it would be PO-YO... and you'll be served some delicious chicken. Of course if you are near Buenos Aires or Montevideo the "ll" isn't prounced as a "y" but rather a "sho"... so you'll need to ask for PO-SHOW if you want chicken.

I think that going to Puerto Rico is the place to be. The sun, the beaches, and oh yes the wonderful nature.

I took four years of spanish in high school and still can't fully understand spanish. I can usually get about every three or four words and just put together the words I know to find out how to respond. Your basic spanish words are really easy. Have a ball!

Same with me. Even though I took four years of it you'd never know. My Spanish is quite rusty. When we visited Nogales I was able to understand a couple words here and there but otherwise there went four years of Spanish down the drain!!

I would think it'd be nice to know a couple phrases, just so you are prepared. Can't hurt eh? But it's probably not necessary. BUT i would suggest taking an english-spanish dictionary though. Why not? Better safe than sorry.
