ipod touch internet connection problems?

im on vacation in florida and im using a relatives wireless internet for my ipod touch. i have the password and all and i type it in and click join. when i do it freezes sorta? but the internet connection sign at the top left of the screen is on so i click the home button. when i go to something that involves internet, it says its not connected? but the internet connection sign is still at the top left of the screen saying its on. help?
